'A dark wood
The circus sits in the old forest outside the city. The night air is fresh and sharp like the woodcutter’s axe in all the old tales you know. The paths to the circus wind around gnarled roots and over thick brambles, treacherous in the shadows cast by the moonlight. Wise old faces peer from tree trunks, knotted and friendly, watching the rêveurs arrive. Silver birches and black yews ring the circus, like the striped walls of a living tent. Inside the gates sits a black and white gingerbread hut, liquorice roof dusted with snow white icing. Visitors may eat any part of it while they buy their tickets from the smiling lady at the window. Instead of a ticket, she hands you a scrap of delicate ivory lace. 'To remember us by,' she says.' © Copyright Failbetter Games 2010-2011 Erin Morgenstern, The Night Circus.
